Long time no news! 2007 was crazy! Texas massage laws changed.
We at WTC have been busy creating a new and improved massage therapy program. We have add new textbooks. Changed lessons. Added new classes. Increased hands on time.
Here are just a few of the changes:
We have added a Kinesiolgy class. Kinesiology is the study of movement. In this class we will look at exactly how movement happens. What happens at the cellular level in the muscles to cause the joint ot move.
We have added another class in massage technique only. In this class we will teach the students to take their massage to the next level. This is were the students will start to learn techniques to assist in pain management. They will learn how and why massage can change peoples posture and relief thier pain. In this class thier massage goes from just relaxing to pain management.
We are also including first aid and CPR.
In the advanced techniques class the students will learn about craniosacral therapy, muscle energy technique, sports massage, aromatherapy, stone massage, mud treatments, body wraps and ear candling.
Some of the massage therapist's throughout the state of Texas have been trying to get the state laws changed. We have felt that to be a professional, safe and effective massage therapist you need more than 300 hours of education. The State law makers have heard our plea.
As of September 1, 2007 House Bill 2644 passed!
This bill increased minimum of 300 hours to 500 hours of education for massage therapist. They have also eliminated the practical exam. They have also adopted the National Certification Board of Therapuetic Massage and Bodyworks exam as the state licensure exam, which can be taken here at WTC.
The massage therapy department as been working on getting our program up and running. We are the first massage school in the area that is now offering the new state approved cirriculum.
We just start a morning class last week. Keep an eye on this blog for student comments.
Evening classes now forming. Call our admission department and schedule and appointment.
Massage is good for suffers of osteoarthritis.
Reseach Shows Massage Improves Arthritis
A study conducted by the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey finds that massage can provide effective relief for people with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritisis a form of arthritis characterized by the chronic degeneration of the cartilage of the joints.
Study Method
The study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, evaluated the effectiveness of massage therapy for adults with osteoarthritis of the knee. Sixty-eight randomly selected adults who had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis were divided into two groups. One group received Swedish massage twice weekly for the first four weeks and then once a week for an additional four weeks. The other group did not receive massage during the same period of time.
Study Results
After eight weeks, the group who received massage reported less pain and stiffness as well as better range of motion than the group that did not receive massage therapy. The massage group also experienced improved walking speed.
Good News for Arthritis Sufferers
The research showed massage therapy to be effective treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee, a condition that affects so many lives. According to the Arthritis Foundation, forty-six million (1 in 5) Americans live with arthritis. It is estimated by 2030, 67 million Americans age 18 and older will be diagnosed with the condition. When you really need to shift gears at a stressful time, take 20 seconds or so to calm yourself.
Simply tilt your head slightly downward, then place your right hand across your forehead, as if feeling your temperature, and place your left hand across the base of your head where it meets the back of your neck. Hold your hands in this position while taking seven or eight slow, deep breaths.
This comforting placement of the hands comes from our body's natural response to calm itself. An example of this would be when we are told something horrific, we respond by saying something like, "Oh my!" or "I forgot," and bring a hand to the forehead.
